Mary's Boy Child
is a 1956 Christmas song, written by Jester Hairston.

It was first recorded by Harry Belafonte. Mahalia Jackson also recorded the song in 1956. When I first heard it about 4 years ago, the group Boney M was singing it, and I immediately fell in love with the song, not only for the tune, but the words were great also. It’s the story of Mary and Joseph, as they need a place to get in out of the cold and dark; they are trying to find a place for Mary to have her child. They find a stable, the shining star is in the sky and the new King is born…"And man shall live forevermore…because of Christmas day".

I’ve always heard that when you hear bells ringing, an Angel gets his wings. With a nice mix of catchy tune and a beautiful and meaningful melody, this song starts out with bells ringing. To hear André Rieu play it is about as close to heaven as one can get. If you have not heard André play it yet, then you are missing a wonderful highlight in music.

It was 2005, at our Christmas concert, they turned down the lights and placed the spotlight on André and those bells rang out and then André started to play…the solo…the sound, most beautiful…how to describe a sound so special as a violin solo from André Rieu? There are moments we don’t want to end, this was one of those moments.

There was total silence as André stood on the stage and then the bow touched the violin and the music was as though there was nothing that could stop it. You could hear a pin drop as we listened to this beautiful moment. As I heard this melody, I closed my eyes and his solo touched my heart and gave me goosebumps. There is just something very special about this song, above all others that I hear…I can’t explain it, truly, it just captures me.

They say that certain tones, or tunes capture us and that’s what makes us love certain artists or musicians, and their music. I guess that André Rieu plays that music because he seems to know what captures my heart and the heart of the world. The lyrics…tell the story, along with the melody. André’s solo gives you something for your soul. So, I play this song all year, not just at Christmas, because once a year is just not enough!

I do believe that the Angels in Heaven smile when they hear André play this beautiful melody. Now, get out your "Christmas Magic" cd, and listen to this wonderful song, you will love it as much as I do, and I am sure you will smile too!

Mary's Boy Child

A long time ago in Bethlehem
So the Holy Bible say
Mary's boy child Jesus Christ
Was born on Christmas Day

Hark now hear the angels sing
A new king's born today
And man will live for evermore
Because of Christmas Day

Trumpets sound and angels sing
Listen what they say
That man will live for evermore
Because of Christmas Day

While shepherds watch their flock by night
They see a bright new star
Then hear a choir of angels sing
Music seemed to come from afar

Now Joseph and his wife Mary
Come to Bethlehem that night
Then find no place to lay the child
Not a single room was in sight

Hark now hear the angels sing
New King’s born today
And man will live for evermore
Because of Christmas Day

Trumpets sound and angels sing
Listen what they say
That man will live for evermore
Because of Christmas Day

By and by they find a little nook
In a stable so forlorn
And in a manger cold and dark
Mary’s little boy was born

Hark now hear the angels sing
New King born today
And man will live for evermore
Because of Christmas Day

Trumpets sound and angels sing
Listen what they say
That Man will live for evermore
Because of Christmas Day
